Meet the Director and Team — Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital

Welcome from the Program Director

Welcome to the St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program! Our fellowship program offers a variety of experiences in all aspects of hospice and palliative medicine to create highly qualified hospice and palliative physicians that feel comfortable practicing in any aspect of the field. We believe that a supportive learning environment with exposure to different clinical scenarios with the time to reflect and synthesize the experiences leads to the best preparedness for independent practice. Our program offers this through experiences at our three community-based hospitals, associated outpatient centers and our institution-owned hospice with its own inpatient hospice facility.

We also strongly believe that holistic care is necessary for those with serious, life-threatening illnesses, and we value an interdisciplinary approach to care and focus on obtaining the skills necessary to lead a strong interdisciplinary care team.

We invite you to look through this website and get to know our faculty, our curriculum and rotations and our program’s strengths. If this interests you or you have any questions, please feel free to contact us to learn more!

Dr. Casacchia is the program director for St. Elizabeth Boardman’s Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program. He found a calling in the care of the elderly and while pursuing a geriatric medicine fellowship, he realized the importance of good palliative medicine skills and an understanding of hospice for care of these older adults with more serious illnesses, so he decided to also pursue hospice and palliative medicine training. His main interests in medicine are promoting relief of suffering, whether through curative measures or comfort measures, and medical education. He is currently the medical director for Hospice of the Valley. Outside of medicine, he enjoys time with his family, hiking in Mill Creek Park, music and supporting his favorite soccer team, the Columbus Crew.
