Program Aims

Our program aims to include the following:

Excellence in Education: Our primary objective is to cultivate an unparalleled educational experience. We are committed to producing top-tier clinicians who can confidently address any patient scenario in the Emergency Department (ED), irrespective of the nature or severity of the complaint. Our graduates will not only be adept at patient care but will also excel in leading and managing bustling ED environments. Our commitment is to produce emergency physicians who pass their written and oral board examinations on their first try. To achieve this, we've designed a comprehensive curriculum that emphasizes learner-centric education, incorporates a flipped classroom approach, and promotes interactive reviews and small group discussions. We've also invested in resources like Rosh Review, Amal Mattu's ECGWeekly, and EMsono subscription for residents. For those who need extra academic support, we're ready with tailored learning plans and other necessary resources. Furthermore, our unique 3-year oral board review, tested tri-annually, ensures consistent performance evaluation.

Addressing the Rural Gap: Recent studies highlight a concerning trend: while the number of emergency physicians is on the rise, their presence in rural areas is dwindling. This decline, coupled with an aging physician population in these regions, forecasts a looming physician shortage crisis. While many new emergency medicine residencies have emerged over the past decade, they predominantly cater to urban locales. We aim to bridge this gap. Our program, based at Mercy Health Anderson Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, will emphasize rural emergency medicine, with integrated rotations at Mercy Health Mt. Orab Medical Center. This rural immersion, spanning approximately 3.5 months, offers residents a deep dive into the unique challenges and rewards of rural emergency care.

Community-Centric Training: The majority of Emergency Physicians will find themselves practicing in community settings. To best prepare them, our program emphasizes training in environments mirroring their future workplaces. While we prioritize this community essence, our unwavering focus remains on competency. We've strategically partnered with sites that offer both top-notch experiences and a community or rural ambiance.

Holistic Physician Well-being: The alarming rates of burnout, mental health stigma, and stress among emergency physicians cannot be ignored. While we recognize that we can't eliminate all stressors, we are committed to equipping our residents with tools to navigate them. Our approach goes beyond clinical skills, delving into personal resilience, team dynamics, and self-awareness. Through executive coaching, team-building exercises, 360 evaluations, and more, we aim to foster a resilient, self-aware, and supportive community of emergency physicians.  In essence, our program is more than just a residency; it's a commitment to shaping the future of emergency medicine, ensuring it's inclusive, competent, and compassionate.
