Program Overview

The Clinical Pastoral Education Program at The Jewish Hospital – Mercy Health has been offering CPE training as a provisional accredited program of ACPE: The Standard for Spiritual Care and Education since 2023. The program offers full and part-time CPE internships. While Mercy Health is a Catholic health care ministry, the CPE program focuses on spiritual care in a pluralistic context and welcomes students of diverse religious and spiritual backgrounds to apply.

CPE students gain experience in spiritual assessment and care, emergency/trauma response, critical care, staff support and advance care planning. Students typically complete clinical hours at The Jewish Hospital – Mercy Health, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Structured group education takes place in weekly seminars with a small group of peers and an ACPE certified educator. In addition to group learning, students receive individualized education, meeting regularly with the ACPE educator to reflect on clinical and educational experiences and personal progress on learning goals and ACPE outcomes.

Each unit of CPE training is 400 hours, divided between structured education and clinical experience. Students who earn credit for four units of CPE have the CPE training that is necessary to pursue board certification as a professional chaplain.
