St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital

St. Elizabeth Youngstown has a surgery department featuring leading-edge technology, including advanced surgical, heart and vascular, orthopedic and neurology services. This includes on-campus ambulatory clinics in freestanding facilities, a cardiac and vascular health center building, an active research department with full time director and a wound care center.

Simulation Labs

A simulation lab is located at all three hospital sites. Suturing, casting, splinting, ECG reviews, sawbones, cadaver labs, codes, airway procedures, central line procedure, ACLS, PALS and BLS is a small list of what the labs have to offer. 


Academic Commitments

What residents in the Orthopedic Residency Program at St. Elizabeth Youngstown can expect:

  • Up to three months of elective time is available in years three through five at the discretion of the program director.
  • Research is a longitudinal experience throughout residency. 
  • PGY 1 Surgical Skills Course is a longitudinal experience during the PGY 1 year. 
  • Residents will attend a yearly weekend workshop at Summa Health Care in Akron, focusing on oncology.
  • Six hours of published, scheduled and held didactic sessions per week. 

The didactic curriculum includes many educational opportunities at Mercy Health Youngstown Orthopedics, including sawbone labs, monthly attending lectures in trauma, spine, sports and hand, monthly journal club, weekly fracture conference and access to a cadaver. Other program events include a trauma basic fracture course and AO advanced fracture course. A yearly resident research day is sponsored by the research department at Mercy Health Youngstown.
