Overview

Thoracic Surgery

Thoracic surgery is the repair of organs located in the thorax, or chest. The thoracic cavity lies between the neck and the diaphragm and contains the heart and lungs (cardiopulmonary system), the esophagus, trachea, pleura, mediastinum, chest wall and diaphragm.

The experienced and compassionate thoracic surgeons of Mercy Health are experts in traditional and new minimally invasive and robotic technology that significantly reduces the risks associated with traditional open surgical procedures, especially for lung and esophageal conditions.

Lung Surgery

Lung surgery may be a necessary treatment for lung disease to repair or remove lung tissue. There are several different types of surgery dependent on the condition and the goal of the surgery. Through advanced surgical procedures, Mercy Health’s expert thoracic surgeons address serious lung conditions such as lung cancer and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Today, many surgeries can be performed minimally invasively with robotic or video assisted devices. This results in less tissue trauma, less pain, shorter hospital stays, faster return to normal activity, less blood loss, fewer transfusions, reduced risk of infection and/or less scarring for most patients. Mercy Health surgeons are able to utilize the Intuitive Surgical da Vinci Robotic System for surgical assistance.

 Procedures We Offer

  • Biopsy
  • Bullectomy – removal of one or more air sacs (bullae) inside the lungs
  • Large volume reduction surgery (LVRS) – removing damaged lung tissue to create room for the remaining lung tissue to expand
