Lung cancer is a major health problem in the United States. Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women, and is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women.
- Approximately 220,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.
- Nearly 160,000 people die from lung cancer annually.
- Lung cancer kills more people than cancers of the breast, prostate and colon combined.
- Tobacco use accounts for 87% of all lung cancer deaths in the U.S.
Most lung cancers could be prevented, because they are related to smoking (or secondhand smoke), or less often to exposure to radon or other environmental factors. But some lung cancers occur in people without any known risk factors for the disease. Reach out to a Mercy Health physician today to discuss participation in a lung cancer screening if you are between the ages of 55-79 years old, have smoked a pack or more of cigarettes a day for 30 years, and are either still smoking or have quit within the last 15 years.
