Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® and the American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center Certification.
Strokes are a leading cause of death and serious long-term disability nationwide and the majority are preventable. As a stroke is an event where seconds can be a massive difference in outcome, having this high-quality stroke care close to home is critical to the health and wellness of the residents of the Mahoning Valley. The thrombectomy-capable stroke center certification is awarded by The Joint Commission to hospitals that are Primary Stroke Centers and also perform endovascular thrombectomy procedures and providing post-procedural care.
“Providing the highest, most advanced level of care while keeping patients close to home is the driving force behind Mercy Health’s continued investment in the stroke program,” said Kathleen Harley, MBA, BSN, president, Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. “Earning this new certification recognizes St. Elizabeth Youngstown for excellence in performing thrombectomies and reflects our commitment to serving our community by providing high-quality care. Our physicians Dr. Praveen Venkat and Dr. Yogesh Gujrati along with our Interventional Radiology nurses, technicians, and our neuroscience program coordinator deliver remarkable patient care results.”
Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital underwent a rigorous, unannounced onsite review in March, during which a team of Joint Commission reviewers evaluated compliance with related certification standards. Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. The reviewers also conducted onsite observations and interviews.
“I am immensely proud of our team for achieving the prestigious Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center Certification. This certification is a testament to Mercy Health and St Elizabeth Youngstown’s commitment to providing the highest quality of care for stroke patients in our community right here locally close to home,” said Dr. Praveen Venkat, medical director of Stroke Care Services. “I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to our entire team, from Mercy Health management to all our physicians and nurses and our support staff. This achievement would not have been possible without their hard work and commitment to excellence.”
St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital has been a certified Primary Stroke Center since 2004 and remains one of the only hospitals in the immediate area to have earned this distinction. The Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Certification recognizes St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital's
ability to perform mechanical thrombectomy, a life-saving procedure that significantly improves patient outcomes. This achievement is a result of the team's dedication to continually improving stroke care and offering the latest in evidence-based treatments to patients in the Mahoning Valley.
“A Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center Certification recognizes healthcare organizations committed to striving for excellence and fostering continuous improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” said Ken Grubbs, DNP, MBA, RN, executive vice president of Accreditation and Certification Operations and chief nursing officer, The Joint Commission. “We commend Mercy Health for using The Joint Commission certification process to reduce variation in clinical processes and to strengthen its clinical program to drive safer, higher quality and more compassionate care for individuals served.”
“We congratulate Mercy Health for this outstanding achievement,” said Nancy Brown, chief executive officer, the American Stroke Association. “This certification reflects its commitment to providing the highest quality of care for stroke patients.
