Mercy Health Gastroenterology Celebrates Milestone

100th Endoscopic Ultrasound Performed

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO (December 3, 2024) – The team at Mercy Health – Springfield Regional Medical Center is celebrating a milestone. Gastroenterologist Dr. Ahmed Edhi has performed his 100th endoscopic ultrasound since joining the team at MercyCrest Gatroenterology in 2022.

“It’s a great privilege to bring this up-to-date technology locally, to increase health care access for our patients and their families,” said Dr. Edhi.

Endoscopies can be important screening tools to help identify cancerous masses and other diseases in the digestive tract. Endoscopic Ultrasound is a technique that combines endoscopy with ultrasound to create images of the digestive tract.

This helps doctors check for any damage to tissues due to swelling or disease. They can also determine if cancer is present, whether it has spread to lymph nodes, the different staging of the cancers, as well as allowing evaluation of masses and for the draining fluids from cysts. Simple exploratory endoscopic ultrasound typically takes less than an hour to complete.

Dr. Edhi is also experienced with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a procedure that combines upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and x-rays to treat problems of the bile and pancreatic ducts.

For those experiencing gastrointestinal issues, Dr. Edhi is one of four providers seeing patients at Mercy Health – MercyCrest Gastroenterology at 30 West McCreight Avenue, Suite 211 in Springfield. Together, these providers are experts in diagnosing and treating a variety of disorders and diseases affecting the digestive system such as ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, and cancers.
