SPRINGFIELD, OHIO (June 28, 2024) – Mercy Health – Urbana Hospital is now using new, state-of-the-art Phaco equipment to offer cataract surgeries to patients in Springfield, Urbana, and neighboring communities.

Cataracts result in the clouding of the lens of the eyeball, preventing clear images from appearing on the eye’s retina. This can result in mild, moderate, or even severely blurred vision. The Phaco equpiment, also known as phacoemulsification, uses laser-assistance to dissolve and remove the cataract, while simultaneously inserting fluid to maintain the correct pressure within the eye. It’s the latest and most advanced method of performing cataract surgery and is far more precise than traditional methods because it utilizes a computer-guided laser.

The equipment was purchased in May with funds provided through the generous support of the Mercy Health Foundation of Clark & Champaign Counties. Staff spent the month training on the new equipment and is now utilizing it to provide this important service for patients experiencing eye problems.
