Mercy Health – Springfield announces that Springfield Pediatric Rehab’s inclusive playground is expanding to include a walking path complete with play and activity stations every 50 yards to engage children along the way.
Springfield Pediatric Rehab received grant funding of more than $18,000 this summer from the Physician’s Charitable Foundation for the playground enhancement project. The walking path will be seven feet wide to provide access for children in wheelchairs, children using gait trainers and walkers and for those on bikes and adaptive tricycles. Various activity stations along the path will be interactive for kids of all abilities. Construction started in August and is due to be complete in November.
The playground, which opened in October 2017, was generously funded through the Mercy Health Foundation of Clark & Champaign Counties. It offers a welcoming environment for children to have fun while developing their sensory skills, motor skills, social skills, emotional skills and strength. In addition to new walking path and activity stations, it includes:
• An adaptive swing
• A soft, level surface ground covering for wheelchair accessibility
• Gait trainer accessibility and level surfaces for kids with balance challenges
• A ramp with access to activities for those with all abilities
• Various play structures chosen specifically for those with disabilities to achieve optimal function
“Mercy Health is pleased to be able to expand inclusive playground. It increases the number of accessible amenities available in our city and adds to a play space that is open to every child in our community to experience,” said Matt Caldwell, President and CEO of Mercy Health – Springfield.
Springfield Pediatric Rehab is located at 1345 North Fountain Blvd., Springfield, OH 45504.
