Promoting cancer awareness

YELLOW SPRINGS — Mills Park Hotel in Yellow Springs is putting a spotlight on cancer awareness while raising funds for the Circle of Victory with various activities planned through Sunday, March 19.
It kicked off the awareness activities by offering discounts March 12 at Ellie’s Restaurant and Bakery, the hotel’s in-house eatery. Activities continued March 14 by inviting hotel guests and locals to sew pillows for those who recently underwent mastectomy procedures.
Not only are the pillows created in the shape of a heart to offer comfort, but for practicality reasons as well. Assistant Hotel General Manager Monika Lindsay said the dip at the top of the heart shape allows more physical comfort as the patients place them under their arms at the incision point or over their chest as a cushion against seat belts. She hopes to create as many pillows as possible to offer the maximum amount of comfort to locals in need. The pillow donations will also include “happiness is” cards drawn by children who attend the Children’s Center in the village.
The heart-shaped pillow project started when Springfield Regional Medical Center described a need for such pillows, which is where they will be donated. Lindsay hopes that the heart-sewing action can grow and continue into a monthly or bi-monthly activity. However, the material costs adds up. Therefore, if individuals would like to donate funds or materials, they can do so by dropping off supplies at the hotel. If individuals are donating fabric, it should be new, clean and cotton. Lindsay said cotton is more cooling and washable.
The Circle of Victory is an annual event in Greene County which aims to raise funds for individuals suffering from cancer to cover costs of items not covered by insurance.
Remaining activities include:
Restaurant Raider Dinner Event
Ellie’s Restaurant and Bakery is offering a preview of its items from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 15 from its spring menu, as well as special buckeye vodka cocktails. A photo booth will be on hand, inviting participation, so individuals may take home a souvenir.
On-site Mammography
The Mercy Health Mobile Mammography Unit will park outside of the hotel and offer screenings on-site between 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, March 17. Following the screening, individuals may help themselves to a complimentary hot beverage and baked treat from Ellie’s. Schedule an appointment by calling 937-532-9332.
Jazz Brunch
Sunday brunch will also include live jazz music by The Wing Walkers. Call 937-319-0400 to make a reservation.
