Mercy Health—St. Rita's Raises Awareness of Lyme Disease in Lima
Lima, Ohio - Mercy Health—St. Rita's is bringing attention to the increasing cases of Lyme disease in the Ohio region. Lyme disease, or Borrelia burgdorferi, is a bacterial infection transmitted through tick bites. While historically more prevalent in the mid-Atlantic states, New England, and the upper Midwest, Ohio has seen a rise in reported cases.
"At Mercy Health, we are dedicated to providing care to patients suffering from conditions like Lyme disease that impact their quality of life," said Mercy Health —St. Rita's representative. As deer ticks, the carriers of Lyme disease, are most active during the summer in wooded areas, cases are being diagnosed more frequently.
Early detection of Lyme disease is crucial, as untreated cases can lead to severe neurological, cardiac, and arthritic complications. Symptoms may include a bull s-eye rash, fever, fatigue, and muscle and joint aches. It is important to seek medical attention if any of these signs occur following a tick bite.
To prevent Lyme disease, Mercy Health—St. Rita’s advises taking precautions such as applying insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and checking for ticks after outdoor activities. Additionally, prompt removal of ticks within the first 36 hours significantly reduces the risk of contracting the disease.
Mercy Health— St. Rita's encourages the community to proactively protect themselves and their families from Lyme disease by following these preventative measures. For more information or to seek medical assistance, please contact Mercy Health—St. Rita's.
