The Jewish Hospital Offers Minimally Invasive Pancreatic Surgery

Pancreatic surgery is among the most challenging and complex procedures in general surgery. The location of the pancreas, as well as its connections to the circulatory system and complexity of pancreatic procedures saw surgeons typically favor a traditional, open surgery approach. However, advances in robotic-assisted technology have made minimally-invasive pancreatic procedures both safe and possible.

“Because the pancreas is located at the back of the body, it’s difficult to access. While laparoscopic surgery introduced the ability to offer minimally-invasive options for many types of surgical procedures, the straight instruments were not well suited for pancreatic surgery,” says Mercy Health Physician and general surgeon Shyam Allamaneni, MD. “The introduction of articulated instruments on the surgical robot makes minimally invasive surgery of the pancreas and the procedure is easier for both patient and surgeon.”

For example, earlier this year, Dr. Allamaneni removed the bottom half of patient’s pancreas and the patient’s spleen to treat pancreatic mucinous neoplasm, an abnormal growth that is curable when removed surgically.

“The patient was feeling better and well on her way to recovery just two days after surgery,” says Dr. Allamaneni.

He also performed a similar procedure to treat an 89-year-old with pancreatic cancer.

“I might have hesitated to perform this procedure had a minimally-invasive option not been available,” said Dr. Allamaneni.

“As with other minimally-invasive, robotic-assisted procedures, patients benefit from decreased blood loss, lower risk of infection, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery times and less scarring,” he adds.
