Mercy Cancer Centers Present Oncology on Canvas Art Exhibit at Mercy Medical Center North Campus

--Nov. 16, 2009

Lilly’s Oncology on Canvas, a free art exhibit honoring the physical and emotional journeys people face when confronted with a cancer diagnosis, will be on display during regular business hours from Nov. 16 to Dec. 4 at the Cancer, Women’s, Imaging and Medical Center at the Mercy Medical Center North campus. The free art exhibit is sponsored locally by Mercy Cancer Centers.

Launched in 2004, Oncology On Canvas is a biennial art competition that invites people with a diagnosis of any type of cancer, as well as their families, friends, caregivers and healthcare providers to express, through art and narrative, the life-affirming changes that give the cancer journey meaning.  The artwork expresses the many feelings of a person with cancer including fear, the loss of individualism, the support of family and friends, and the perseverance of those who survive.

To highlight the art exhibit for cancer victims in our area, Mercy is sponsoring a “Cancer Survivors Reception” from 5:30-7:30 PM, Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, in the Atrium at Mercy Medical Center North Women’s Center.  Music, light refreshments and discussion of the artwork with patients, doctors and staff will be part of the reception.  Please call 865-859-7002 to RSVP for the reception.

Encouraging cancer patients to express their thoughts, feelings, and emotions in creative ways can provide many benefits,” said Teresa McCusker, Mercy Cancer Center dietitian and coordinator of the Oncology on Canvas exhibit at Mercy Medical Center North.  “The artwork and narratives in this exhibit are very moving and help those of us who work with cancer patients to better understand a patient’s emotions while undergoing treatment.”

Lilly Oncology on Canvas is presented by Lilly USA, LLC, a world leader in cancer research and treatment, in partnership with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, the oldest survivor-led cancer advocacy organization in the U.S.
